Alpine Skiing The following five events have the same basic objective - to get down the hill the fastest. Downhill - the vertical drop is 800-1100 metres for men and 500-800 metres for women. A limited number of control gates are strategically placed on the course to mark the racer's path. There is only one run. Slalom - The vertical drop is 180-220 metres for men and 140-200 metres for women. Men must pass through 52-78 gates and the women 42-63 gates. There are two runs and the skier with the fastest aggregate time is the winner. Giant Slalom - the vertical drop is 300-450 metres for men and 300-400 metres for women. the race is run the same as the slalom race but there are fewer gates, at least 36, and they are spaced further apart. Super Giant Slalom - the vertical drop is 500-650 metres for men and 400-600 metres for women. There are even fewer gates and there is only one run. Combined - this event consists of a downhill race followed by a slalom race. Skiers receive points based on their finishing times and the skier with the lowest combined time is the winner. This is often a "paper race" at the World Cup level.
