Archers & Bowhunters
A Brief History:
Archery, the skill
of shooting arrows with a bow, was one of the earliest hunting techniques
acquired by humans. The bow and arrow were used for this purpose more
than 30,000 years ago.
They were also principal
weapons in warfare until superseded by gunpowder. Hunting with the bow
and arrow is still popular, and archery in the form of target shooting
has developed into a national and international competitive sport.
The Federation Internationale
de Tir a l'Arc (FITA) has continued to hold world championships since
1931. In 1933 it established separate competitions for men and women.
Modern arrows are usually made of aluminum or carbon tubing, and the fletchings
are plastic, resulting in arrows of uniform weight, flight characteristics,
and performance.
Modern tournament
bows are made of composite, epoxy-laminated strips of fiberglass-impregnated
plastic faced with thin wood or carbon strips. The tendency of a bow to
rotate during use is prevented by the stabilizers, or weighted metal rods.
