A Brief History:

Bobsleighs are either two or four-man. They are made of steel and fibre-glass, and weigh between 200 and 250 kilograms.

Important pieces of equipment include the four runners on which the sled rides. Drivers, Brakemen and the two Crewmen in a four-man sled wear special equipment. This includes helmets, goggles, modified track-spikes and aerodynamic suits.

In a competition, the team whose sled has the quickest aggregate 4-heat time wins the race. The speed of the push, the quality of the sled and the driver's ability to guide the sled are the three main elements to a race.

The start involves 2 or 4 athletes pushing the sled from a stationary position, for about 50 metres, accelerating it as quickly as possible, to as high a velocity as possible, and efficiently "loading" into the sled. the driver guides the bobsleigh down the track following the fastest line, while minimizing steering corrections that slow the progress of the sled. After the finish line, the brakeman will apply the brakes to stop the sled.
