Five Pin Bowling
A Brief Overview:
Fivepins is a variation
of bowling that is very popular in Canada. In this game there are five
pins, and unlike tenpin bowling, the pins have different point values.
The front centre or
head pin is worth five points while the two pins on either side are worth
three points. The two pins on the outside known as the corner pins, have
a value of two points.
In earlier versions
of fivepin bowling it was necessary to knockdown the left corner pin,
known as the counting pin, for any points to be scored.
There are ten frames
per game with each frame consisting of three rolls of the ball. A strike
is scored if all the pins are knocked down on the first roll. A spare
is counted if all the pins are knocked over in two rolls. When three rolls
are required the total value of the pin knocked down is the score for
that frame.
A total score of 450
is recorded in a perfect game in which only twelve balls would have been
rolled recording a strike each time. Other forms of bowling include candlepins,
duckpins, and ninepins.
