Broomball
A Brief Overview:
Broomball is a game
that can be traced as far back as the turn of the century starting in
Canada, and has grown from being viewed strictly as a recreational sport
to a highly competitive game offering Provincial and National Championships.
Broomball is a winter
team sport played on ice. Similar to hockey, with six players on the ice
per team, players try to score goals on the opposing team by directing
the ball into the net with their brooms.
While players originally
used corn brooms dipped in rubber, present day brooms are molded rubber.
Players use special broomball shoes to run on the ice surface.
The newest design
in shoes provides excellent traction which necessary to make the quick
stops, starts and changes in direction the game demands.
The goaltender can
use a catching glove and a blocker as well as a chest protector and shin
pads but cannot wear hockey type goalie leg pads.
Compared to other
winter team sports the equipment required for broomball is relatitively
inexpensive.
