Cricket
A Brief Overview:
Cricket is a bat and
ball, team game played during the summer in the British Isles and in several
countries influenced by the British, such as Australia, New Zealand, India,
Pakistan, South Africa, and West Indian nations.
Cricket is played
between two teams of 11 players on a grassy field about 122 to 152 m (400
to 500 ft) long and at least 68 m (225 ft) wide.
In the center of the
field, 20 m (66 ft) apart, are two wickets, each consisting of three stumps--wooden
poles--placed closely together so that the ball cannot pass between them.
Wooden bails lie in
grooves on top of them. The object of the defending team is for one player,
the bowler, to throw the ball without bending the elbow and strike the
wicket to dislodge the bails.
The other team's batsman
protects the wicket with a paddlelike bat and also tries to score runs.
One complete run through both teams' batting order is an inning, and games,
or matches, comprise one or two innings, determined beforehand.
A single match may
last several hours to several days.
