Canadian Olympic
Association
The Canadian Olympic
Association (COA) a private, not-for-profit corporation, is responible
for all aspects of Canadašs involvement in the Olympic Movement, including
Canadšs participation in the Pan American and Olympic Games. In addition,
the COA manages a variety of programs that help develop sport and promote
the Olympic Movement and Ideals in Canada through cultural and educational
means.
The Canada Games
The Canada Games is
the country's largest multi-sport event. Held every two years, alternating
between summer and winter. The Canada Games features 18 sports in Summer
& 22 for the Winter, and include events in hockey, figure skating, cross-country
skiing, basketball, gymnastics, ringette, biathlon, speed skating, boxing,
shooting, judo, fencing, squash, curling, swimming, badminton, table tennis,
rugby, diving, volleyball, and weightlifting.
The Commonwealth
Games
The Commonwealth Games,
originally called the British Empire Games, were first held in 1930 at
Hamilton, Ont., Canada, to provide competition for the member nations
of the British Commonwealth 2 years after each Olympic Games competition.
They have been held every four years, ecept for 1942 & 1946. Although
several sports are staged, the Commonwealth Games are best known for their
world-class competition and records in track and field and swimming. The
Commonwealth Games converted to metric distances in 1970. Women have competed
since 1934.
