Horseshoe
A Brief Overview:
Horseshoe pitching
is a game in which players attempt to toss a horseshoe-shaped object from
the area around one stake so that when it lands it encircles the other
stake, which is 40 ft (12.2 m) away.
The playing surface
is usually bare earth, and the stakes project 14 in (35.6 cm) from the
ground. The game may be played by two individuals or by four in partnerships.
The encirclement of
the stake is called a ringer and scores 3 points, and if no ringers are
made the horseshoe nearest the stake counts 1 point. A game for two is
played to 50 points, and for four, to 21 points.
Horseshoe pitching
developed from the ancient game of quoits or a similar ringtoss game.
