Jiu-Jitsu The roots of jiu-jitsu go back over 2000 years and are deeply embedded in Japanese history. Jiu-jitsu is a martial art developed by the warrior class (bushi) of Japan. As a part of the classical bujutsu, it is defined as the art of flexibility. The use of throwing, striking, joint locking, neck restraint techniques and defensive weapons encompassing the whole combat spectrum, makes jiu-jitsu the most effective and complete martial art. A technical manual is available to explain in more detail these various components of the art. Historically, jiu-jitsu is the single most important Japanese martial art because the modern budo systems of judo, aikido, hapkido, nippon shorinji kempo and some systems of karate-do all have their roots in jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu is a sport that involves completing controlled techniques delivered to legal target areas under supervised conditions in a 5m x 5m matted area. The matches (two, one-minute rounds) are fought in a continuous action format with judges and a centre referee.
