Judo
A Brief Overview:
Judo, meaning the
gentle or giving way, is a relatively recent activity synthesized from
many jujitsu methods by Jigoro Kano.
Judo is the principle
of the maximum-efficient use of mind and body. The ultimate aim of the
study of Judo is to train the body and to cultivate the mind through the
practice of the methods of attack and defense. Professor Kano summarized
his teaching in the slogans "Maximum-Efficiency with Minimum Effort"
and "Mutual Welfare and Benefit". Throws and grappling are the
principal techniques.
Practioners are trained
to fall safely in order to prevent injury. In contests, points are awarded
to the thrower who performs with good technique and the partner who lands
on their back. A win may be obtained by points or by grappling techniques
which immobilize the opponent on their back for 30 seconds.
First introduced in
1964, over 100 countries participated at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
