Lawn Bowls
A Brief History:
Lawn bowls, or simply
bowls, involves rolling balls, the bowls, down finely manicured grass
lanes so that they stop in close proximity to a smaller ball.
Bowls is an amateur
game played either indoors or outdoors by both men and women in teams
of 1 to 4. Prehistoric in origin, it was played in various forms by the
Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, who brought their version, BOCCIE, to northern
Europe.
It was popular in
England by the 12th century, and the Scots codified the rules in 1849.
The standard bowling green is 120 ft (36.57 m) by 120 ft and is divided
into 6 parallel rinks or lanes.
The first player rolls
the jack, a white ball along the rink. Then the players each roll their
bowls, with the teams alternating turns. At the completion of a round,
or end, each bowl closer to the jack than an opponent's scores 1 point.
The game is over either
after a specified number of ends (usually 21 for 4-person teams) or at
a specified game point (21 in singles). A common tactic is curved-path
rolls that knock opponents' bowls aside.
