Luge
A Brief Overview:
Luge is a traditional
European alpine sport which uses a sled with two runners to race down
a snow or ice course. Sleds are designed for one or two people.
Two wooden runners
are connected by steel cross members with a fabric seat or fibreglass
pod suspended from them.
Luge racing is comprised
of three disciplines: Luge, Sledding, which is done on a ski hill or snow
track; Natural Luge, which takes place on an ice covered flat track; and
Artificial Luge or more commonly referred to as Luge, the Olympic version,
which takes place on an ice track formed with vertically banked corners.
Natural Luge, the
other competitive discipline, is different from Luge in that the slider
can use braking to maneuver the sled and there is a rein to assist in
steering. Luge sledding is the non-competitive recreational version of
the sport.
Used to introduce
a person to luge or just to have fun on a sled, it can be done virtually
any where there is a hill with snow. The track is outlined with road pylons
or hay bales.
