Modern Pentathlon
A Brief Overview:
Modern Pentathlon
is a multi-sport Olympic event involving the five disciplines of swimming,
running, shooting, fencing and riding. Scoring is based on a point system
accumulated over the five events.
In every event there
is a standard performance which is equated to 1,000 modern pentathlon
points.
€ Running -Men 4 km, if completed in 14 minutes 15 seconds earns
1,000 points. Plus or minus 3 points for every second.
€ Swimming (Freestyle) - 300 km, if completed in 3 minutes 54 seconds
earns 1,000 points. Plus or minus 4 points per half-second.
€ Shooting - From a range of 10m, competitors take 20 shots at snap targets
with a 4.5 calibre air pistol. 172 target points = 1000 pentathlon points,
+/-12 pentathlon points per target.
€ Fencing - Competition is for one hit within two minutes. The weapon
used is called the epee. Participants fence every competitor, with a 70%
winning ratio gaining a score of 1,000 points.
€ Riding - Consists of a stadium course of 350 m, arranged around 12 obstacles
in one minute = 1100. The riders must complete the course in a time of
1 minute 43 seconds to garner 1,100 modern pentathlon points.
