Orienteering
A Brief Overview:
Orienteering is an
outdoor sport that combines the endurance of distance running with survival
skills. It involves cross-country running between routing points using
a map and compass for guidance.
Each runner carries
a compass and a map of the terrain marked with routing points. There are
two versions of the sport. In the first, runners must pass specified points
in a sequence, the runner with the best time winning.

must pass as many points as possible in a specified time. Each location
has a point value determined by its distance from the starting point and
the difficulty involved in reaching it; the high scorer wins. All routing
points are marked by red and white flags visible from 50 m (54.7 yd) in
any direction.
The British army conducted
similar races in the early 20th century, but the credit for popularizing
orienteering goes to Maj. Ernst Killander of Sweden, who used it (1918)
to attract young athletes to cross-country running.
