Parks & Recreation
A Brief History:
The roots of what
was to become the modern recreation and park movement were planted during
the late 1800s.
Recreation was seen
as something people needed in order to improve their character and physical
health.
As a result, cities
began formally organizing parks and playgrounds, and YMCA¹s, YWCA¹s, Boy
Scouts, Girl Guides, youth and service clubs began to flourish.
Most of the emphasis
was placed on helping the urban disadvantaged; socializing the children
of immigrants, combating juvenille delinquency and tackling such social
ills as drinking, gambling and an army of physically unfits recruits.
Today society¹s problems
are still simillar to those of the past and the role of recreation and
parks is to assist in the development of strong, healthy and vibrant communities
is more important than ever.
Recreation plays vital role in the amateur sport community in Canada,
and acts as the "go between" for the sport community and the
general public.
