Roller Sports
A Brief History:
Roller Skating may
be enjoyed by men and women of all ages in both a competitive or recreational
setting. The recreational skater may pursue the activity by contacting
their local roller rink or community recreation department.
The individual interested
in pursuing the competitive aspect of roller skating has the choice of
three areas of competition.
Roller Hockey
is essentially like ice hockey only players use inline skates. In roller
hockey - gloves, helmets, knee and elbow pads are required. The goaltenders
use full equipment much the same as in ice hockey.
Artistic Roller
Skating is comparable to Figure Skating only the participants use
rollerskates. In Artistic Roller Skating there are four separate disciplines:
Singles, Pairs, Dance, Compulsory Figures.

Roller Speed Skating
is very similar to ice speed skating the only difference once again being
that the ice speed skater uses ice skates and the roller speed skater
uses inline skates. In speed skating competitors race around an oval either
indoors (ice rink size) or outdoors. The distances competed in vary from
300 to 10,000 metres.
