Shooting
A Brief History:
The first portable
firearms were developed during the 14th century, but it took almost 500
years to perfect a gun that was accurate enough for target shooting.
During the mid-1800s
many countries formed national organizations to govern shooting matches,
and international competitions began to flourish. From 1871 to 1880 the
United States and the countries of Great Britain engaged in an annual
series of matches that set the pattern for modern international events.
Since 1907, competitions
have been governed by the International Shooting Union, holding a world
championship every 4 years. Shooting has been an Olympics event since
1896.
