Shuffleboard
A Brief History:
Shuffleboard, also
known as shovelboard, is a game in which 2 players, or 4 players in partnership,
slide flat disks across a specially marked court. One player or partnership
has 4 red disks, and the opponent has 4 black disks.
The disks are propelled
by special sticks with a U-shaped piece at one end to accommodate them.
The shuffleboard court is 52 ft (15.8 m) long and 6 ft (1.8 m) wide; 6.5
ft (2 m) toward the center of the court from each end is a baseline from
which the disks are played.
Still closer to the
center from each end is a triangle divided into 6 sections with scoring
and penalty values marked in each. All 8 disks are played first from one
end and then from the other.
A disk scores or is
penalized the value of the section in which it comes to rest, and, since
a player may either try to land in a scoring section or try to displace
an opponent's disk (and simultaneously land in a scoring section), the
score cannot be determined until all 8 disks have been shot. A game may
be to 50, 75, or 100 points.
