Soaring
A Brief History:
A soaring pilot is
someone who is enthused by the beauty of flight, exhilarated by the ability
to float high in the sky, free as a bird, making use of natural energy
in the atmosphere to sustain a small motorless aircraft.
It is easy to master
the fundamentals, to pilot a sailplane or glider safely, but to soar with
understanding and style - therin lies a lifetime of challenge. Sailplanes
have the same controls as airplanes. The major difference is an airplane
uses fuel to sustain it, while a sailplane relies on rising air.
Training is very thorough
and includes practical flight training and ground school. The sport is
accessible financially and equipment can be rented at very reasonable
rates. Young people are encouraged to participate and most operations
have special lower rates for them.
You can solo a glider
at an earlier age than you can drive a car, which is indicative of the
safety of the sport. There are some 40 soaring operations in Canada from
coast to coast.
