Soccer
A Brief History:
Soccer is probably
the most popular sport in the world. Two teams of 11 players attempt to
guide an inflated ball into goal cages at opposite ends of a playing field.
Soccer is unique because
of its restriction on the use of the hands; only the goalkeeper may handle
the ball, and then only within a limited area. The other 10 players must
advance the ball using primarily their feet, although a proficient soccer
player can use almost every part of the body--including the head--to control
the ball. The continuous action and fast pace of soccer have made it a
major spectator sport throughout the world, and for the same reasons it
has attracted millions of players.
The rules of soccer
are relatively simple, and little equipment is required. Players wear
shirts, shorts, cleated shoes, and sometimes shin guards tucked inside
their socks. The length of the field may be 100-130 yd (91.4-118.9 m),
and the width, 50-100 yd (45.7-91.4 m); the field must always be longer
than it is wide.
