Synchronized Dwimming Synchronized swimming is sport which defies all outward appearances. To the casual observer, a syncro swimmer seems to glide effortlessly through the water. In reality the routine involves technique, artistry, strengh and endurance. About half of a swimmer's routine is performed with head underwater. While in this position, the syncro swimmer keeps their legs in the air, above water, executing a series of kicks, spins, and choreographed movements. There are similar moves done with the head above water as well. In these cases, the syncro swimmer must show artistic skill and flair while, in many instances, keeping the body out of the water from the waist up. As in figure skating, a panel of judges mark the competitors on technical merit and artistic impression. Technical merit, which is 60 per cent of the total mark, includes the execution, synchronization and degree of difficulty of a swimmers routine. Artistic impression, the remaining 40 per cent of the score, is based on choreography, music interpretation, and presentation.
