Tae kwon-do
A Brief History:
Tae kwon-do is a form
of martial art that pits two opponents against each other within a specific
designated area.
The competitors wear
protective equipment such as head gear, arm protectors, chest [protectors,
groin protectors, and shin guards.
To score points a
competitor must kick or punch their opponent in a marked legal area on
the chest protector, or by a kick to the protected head of the opponent
(a punch to the head is illegal).
Matches consist of
three rounds, each a duration of three minutes, with a one minute break
between rounds. Eight weight classes (kg., lbs.) exist in both the mens
and womens categories, however the womens weights will be slightly less
in each division. They are as follows:
€ Fin Weight
€ Fly weight
€ Bantam weight
€ Feather weight
€ Welter weight
€ Middle weight
€ Heavy weight.
Within each club,
qualifications for the different belt levels may vary from white belt,
to the highest level of black belt.
