Tennis
A Brief Overview:
Tennis is probably
the most popular and universal of the racquet-and-ball sports. The basic
object of the game is to use a racquet to hit the ball over a net but
within the boundaries of the opposite half of the court. The word tennis
is derived from the Old French name for the game, tenetz.
Approximately 100
years later, the British aristocracy started to play the game. The game
was played outdoors on grass on an hourglass-shaped court, and the net
was much higher than it is today.
The standard tennis
court is 78 ft (23.8 m) long. For singles play, the court is 27 ft (8.2
m) wide; for doubles, the width is extended to 36 ft (11 m). Players serve
for one complete game. This is accomplished by tossing the ball into the
air and, with a throwing motion of the racquet hand, hitting the ball
with the face of the racquet.
On each serve the
server has two opportunities to make a legal serve. After the serve the
players attempt to hit the ball back and forth over the net until one
player commits an error or is unable to return the ball.
