CIAU
A Brief Overview:
Sport plays a significant
role in the life of Canadian universities. Educational institutions regard
sport at an organized competitve level to be a legitimate part of the
educational.
Universities assumed
the dominant role in competitive sport development, and in 1906 the Canadian
Intercollegiate Athletic Union was formed as an umbrella governing body
for affiliated universities and colleges.

Students were intially
responsible for the organization of sport programs, however this eventually
led in 1961 to the creation of todays Canadian Interuniversity Athletic
Union which is the national governing body for menıs and womenıs university
sport in Canada, and is composed of the majority of degree-granting universities
in the country.
There are 47 CIAU
members within the 5 geographically alligned regional associations.
