Water Ppolo
A Brief Overview:
Water polo is a team
game that demands swimming skills, body balance and control, and passing
and throwing abilities. It is one of the world's most demanding sports.
The object is to score
as many goals as possible by throwing the waterproofed ball into the opponent's
goal.
A team consists of
a goalie--the only player allowed to hold the ball with two hand, three
defenders, and three forwards. Each player must wear a colored and numbered
cap. Fouls are called by the referee for taking the ball underwater, holding
a player who does not have the ball, holding onto the side of the pool
or pushing off from it with the feet, and touching the ball with both
hands at the same time.
Teamwork is very important
in water polo, and the skills used in the game are similar to those used
in basketball and soccer. The ball is advanced or passed with one hand,
or dribbled by pushing the ball forward between the arms with the chest
on the water.
Water polo originated
in Great Britain in the early 1870s.
