Water Skiing
A Brief Overview:

Water Skiing is the Sport of riding on skis along the waters surface while being towed by a motor-propelled boat.

It probanly originated on the French Riviera in the 1920's. In recreational water skiing, the type of ski, length of tow rope, and the speed of the boat may vary with individual taste. In championship competitions, skiis of hickory, ash, fiberglass, or aluminum are used. They must be 4ft. long and not more than 8in. or less than 4in wide.

There are usually three events in water ski tournaments: slalom, jumping, and freesyle (trick riding). In the slalom the skiers are towed through a staggered series of bouys and must ski outside each of them. In jumping, the contestants are towed over an inclined ramp 20-22 feet long and 6 feet high: jumps of over 140 feet from the point of take-off to the point where the skie's foot enters the water have been recorded. In freestyle contestants choose their own routines, many of them remarkably intricate.

The World Water Ski Union was founded in 1949.
